Masters still getting a kick out of footy

The Woodend-Hesket Masters are calling on new players to join the club for a much-anticipated return to playing games this season.

They are grey, they are bald and they say they’re too old, but Woodend-Hesket Masters still get a kick out of footy… so says their club song.

Masters football is for men aged from 35 years old with an emphasis on “footy for fun”, with games in the Victorian AFL Masters League more social than serious.

After a disrupted two seasons because of COVID-19, the Woodend-Hesket Masters are calling on new players to join the club for a much-anticipated return to playing games this season.

“Footy is more than a game for us, it’s about connection and socialising while getting fit playing a game we love,” said president Jason Koliba.

“Throughout COVID we trained whenever we could as it was a chance for us to get together and shake off the isolation blues.”
Koliba said the club was set for a big year with games locked in and sponsors on board.

“Despite a tough few years for local businesses, our sponsors have jumped on board again to support the best club in town,” Koliba said.

“With many new families moving to the Macedon Ranges after so many months in lockdown in the city, we’d love to welcome any men wanting to make a heap of new mates while improving their physical and mental health.

“You don’t need to be good, you don’t need to have even played Aussie rules before, it’s about having fun.

“We’ve got players from Ireland, England and even had an American playing with us, and we play against blokes from all walks of life. There’s no barriers, just a willingness to have fun while getting fit.”

The club is recruiting new players for the 2022 season and is inviting anyone interested to join in training every Friday from 6.30pm at the Racecourse Oval at Buffalo Stadium on Forest Street.

Nights may change to Thursday during cricket season with junior teams playing on Friday nights.
