Two sides were unbeaten in Riddell League A-grade netball going into last Saturday’s seventh round, and Woodend-Hesket soon showed its depth of ability with a systematic 57-35 victory against Lancefield.
The Hawks took control in the second term, and ace recruit goal shooter Rebecca Hicks showed her class with 37 goals, backed up by Charlee Duff-Tytler with 15. Both scored above 90 per cent accuracy in the windy conditions.
A 33-16 half-time advantage at Gilbert Gordon Oval was one that the Tigers could not overcome; in-form Shanae Brundell managed 26 of the Tigers’ goals.
Lancefield is now third on the ladder and was heartened to remain unbeaten in B-grade, as best on court Tarnee Hammond landed 53 goals in the 64-35 scoreline.
Hawks’ premiership coach Ty Coppinger must be pleased with the way her side is playing, with the long-awaited new court to be opened soon.
Romsey’s hopes of staying in the hunt for A-grade finals received a setback in a high-scoring contest against Melton Centrals — a real finals prospect despite being sixth on the ladder.
Centrals shooting power left the Redbacks struggling until one of the visitors’ stars was injured and took no further part in the match.
Charlize Bellette scored 34 goals for Romsey with the end result 64-52.
Fourth-placed Gisborne Giants took control in the second half to topple Diggers Rest 50-36 and remain in fifth place, and Wallan scored its second win at the expense of Melton South.
This Saturday’s big match is Macedon (fourth) versus Woodend-Hesket at Tony Clarke Reserve.
