Hear six peaks speak

Professor Golding is a great raconteur, a geologist, a keen cyclist and one of the inaugurators of the Great Dividing Trail.

Newham and District Landcare Group is hosting a free presentation by Honorary Professor Barry Golding AM on November 7 in the Newham Hall.

Professor Golding will reference his recently published book, Six Peaks Speak – Unsettling Legacies in Southern Dja Dja Wurrung Country, co-written with geologist Clive Willman.

The book seeks to connect some of the fascinating, unjoined dots between geology, vegetation, First Nations and land management history, from Deep Time to the present day. There is something in this presentation for everyone.

Magnificently researched, the stories of six iconic peaks in central Victoria present evidence from diverse historic sources including Crown Reserve files, State Library Victoria, Public Record Office Victoria, local museum libraries and more than 70 local and expert informants. They also provide insight – from over five decades of living, walking and cycling in this country – into how the mountain peaks have been managed and suggest ways to creatively heal and reconnect with them.

Professor Golding is a great raconteur, a geologist, a keen cyclist and one of the inaugurators of the Great Dividing Trail. He is also a patron of the Australian Men’s Shed Association.

He stresses that “Central Victoria has a rarely told ‘bottom up’ history, which is ripe for the unwrapping and retelling. So much of what happened at and since unsettling contact in this landscape, goes right back to the rocks in Deep Time”.

Friday, November 7, 7pm – 9pm

Newham Mechanics Institute, 1292 Rochford Road, Newham
