Castlemaine made the trek to Dower Park on Saturday to take on Kangaroo Flat fresh from their round one win over Golden Square.

The match saw new recruits Dylan Landt and Zack Derksen make their debut for the Magpies.

The Roos were first to get a goal on the board off the boot of Mitch Rovers.

But the Magpies soon bounced back with two of their own.

Flat pegged another back but Castlemaine responded with two more from Kalan Huntly and Harrison Sheahan to lead by 13 points at the first break.

New coach Bailey Henderson nabbed the first goal of the second term and this was followed up with majors to new recruit Dylan Landt, former coach Michael Hartley and Kalan Huntly. Hartley rounded out half-time with another goal to see the Magpies stretch their lead to 44 points at half-time.

Stalwart John Watson goaled early in the third before Kangaroo Flat finally found a reply via Mitchell Collins.

But Castlemaine fired back with goals from Hartley, Landt and Archie Rixon.

Campbell Smith stepped up for the Roos before Landt snatched another.

Despite a 65-point deficit, Flat did not bow their heads and found a bit of momentum to kick two more goals through Nicholas Lang and Angus Macpherson. The seesaw continued over the remainder of the term but by three-quarter-time Castlemaine maintained a 65-point lead.

Flat’s Max Johnson snapped a quick goal early in the final term but from that point on it was all one-way traffic with Hartley and Rixon trading goals for Castlemaine.

Harrison Sheahan put the final nail in the coffin to see the Magpies claim a convincing 88-point win. Castlemaine 23.12 (150) to Kangaroo Flat 8.14 (62).

Best for the Magpies were Dylan Landt, Michael Hartley, Callum McConachy, Hunter Staples, Williams Marks and Oliver Britt.

The side is currently sitting in third spot.

The Castlemaine Reserves narrowly lost their clash to Flat by eight points. The Magpies led at the end of the first term before the Roos hopped away. The Magpies fought their way back into the match in the final term but couldn’t quite get over the line.

Best were Ben McConachy, Jack Nutall, Alex Welch, Aidan Goddard, Josiah Bell and Bodhi Robinson.

The Under 18s had a big win to the tune of 78 points. The Magpies opened with a six-goal-to-one haul in the first term and never looked back. Best were Logan Browne-Kerr, Benjamin Lalit, Fraser McAinch, Oliver Cassidy, Max Matheson and Zachary Thompson.
