The newest club/organisation among 13 in contention for a $2500 donation came up trumps in a public vote to celebrate Lancefield Community Bank’s 25th anniversary on Saturday.
Formed in 2024, the in-person public vote conducted at Lancefield Farmers Market from 9am to noon resulted in the unexpected profitable outcome for Romsey-Lancefield United Basketball Club.
Before a very large crowd, a short time after the bank’s 25th anniversary cake had been cut, bank chair Suzie Ewart announced the fledgling club was the $2500 donation winner, amid wide applause.
Basketball club vice-president, Simon Greenwood, thanked the community bank for giving local groups a chance to be supported; it was a real boost for the club and the money would go towards the cost of new uniforms for next season.
Greenwood expressed appreciation to members and supporters who had turned up to cast their votes for the club.
From humble beginnings, RLUBC has attracted encouraging support across Romsey and Lancefield — with some players initially joining up from Riddell.
With Aussie Hoops and Mini-Roos for the younger brigade, the club trains at the Romsey Recreation Centre and is affiliated with the strong Sunbury competition.
The club fields 19 teams overall, with about 200 players being catered for each week.
RLUBC has no doubt basketball is in a strong growth period in Lancefield-Romsey and expects this to continue.
Any families and/or players who may be interested in becoming involved is invited to contact the club.
It was congratulations all round from bank board members and staffers from the Lancefield and Romsey branches, with the 13 participating clubs/organisations commended on their involvement.
Contestants for the $2500 were Lancefield Agricultural Society, Lancefield Cricket Club, Lancefield Football Netball Club, Lancefield Golf Club, Lancefield Mechanics Institute, Lancefield Men’s Shed, Lancefield Neighbourhood House, Lancefield Recreation Reserve, Lancefield – Romsey Lions Club, History at Lancefield and Romsey, Romsey-Lancefield Ambulance Auxiliary, Romsey-Lancefield RSL Sub-branch, Romsey-Lancefield United Basketball Club.
