Let’s talk dementia

WLCG is also preparing to welcome its first participants to Macgregor’s Farm in October.

A Woodend group supporting people living with dementia and their carers is inviting the community to come together for a morning tea during Dementia Action Week.

Woodend Lifestyle Carers Group will host the event at Macgregor’s Farm, 78 Old Lancefield Road, Woodend North, on Wednesday, September 23, from 10am.

The morning tea will provide an opportunity for local people to share experiences, ask questions and learn more about living with dementia in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Woodend Lifestyle Carers Group was established in 2012 after several local couples whose lives had been affected by dementia came together to share their experiences and support one another.

The group became a not-for-profit association and charity in 2014 as demand for its support grew across the Macedon Ranges and surrounding communities.

WLCG president Rosemary said the group recognised early on that dementia could leave both carers and those living with the condition feeling isolated.

“Talking with others in a safe space can bring about practical guidance and shared wisdom to support you on your path forward,” she said.

The group meets every Wednesday morning over tea or coffee, providing an informal opportunity for people to talk, share information and connect with others who understand the challenges of dementia.

The September 23 morning tea coincides with Dementia Action Week, which runs from September 21 to 27 and this year focuses on encouraging Australians to talk more openly about dementia.

WLCG is also preparing to welcome its first participants to Macgregor’s Farm in October.

The 10-acre property was gifted to the organisation by a Woodend resident in 2017, providing the foundation for the group’s long-held goal of establishing a day respite and enrichment centre for people living with early-stage, home-based dementia.

At the purpose-built homestead, people living with dementia will be able to take part in an enrichment program focused on friendship, respect and meaningful activities, while carers have several hours to attend to their own needs.

WLCG is currently recruiting specialised staff for the program and is also seeking volunteers through its Friends of Macgregor’s Farm program.

The group says there are many ways for the local community to support the new facility as it develops.

The Dementia Action Week morning tea is open to anyone interested in learning more about dementia or supporting people affected by memory loss.

“One conversation at a time can truly make a difference,” WLCG said.
