Riddell league scraps junior comps

The Riddell District Football League board, in conjunction with a majority of the league's junior clubs, has decided to cancel all of the junior competitions for 2020.

Earlier today the Riddell District Football Netball League board, in conjunction with a majority of the league’s junior clubs, decided to cancel all of the junior competitions for 2020.
News in the past 48 hours that COVID-19 community transmission cases had infiltrated two schools within the league’s southern boundaries hastened the league’s decision.
The league’s senior competition had been cancelled earlier in the week, but there had been high hopes a junior comp could be held when it became safe to do so.
The two schools – one in Sunbury and the other in Melton – have been forced to close and undergo deep cleaning.
The league’s commitment to staging junior football could not be sustained with the knowledge that it was now not safe to proceed.
It was agreed it was in the best interests of the safety of the community, junior players, officials, volunteers and families to cancel the junior season.
The league thanks all junior players, officials and clubs for their efforts this year, and looks forward getting all the boys and girls back on the footy fields and netball courts in 2021.
