Bus commuters without shelter

The bus shelter has been the target of ongoing vandalism leaving commuters without shelter from the elements.

Castlemaine CBD bus commuters have been left without shelter from the elements thanks to an ongoing campaign of vandalism.
Local resident James Taylor contacted the Express over his concerns about the town’s Mostyn Street bus shelter.
“Unfortunately, it seems there has been a silent war going on between the council and the group of yobbos who have delighted in adding graffiti and/or smashing the panelling that covered the rear and both ends of the shelter,” Mr Taylor said.
“I’m not sure how many times the panels have been replaced, but now the shelter stands there sans any type of protection from those cold southerlies and it appears that is how it will remain.
“I hate to think that those vandals who cause such wanton destruction feel they have achieved a small victory,” he said.
Jess Howard, Mount Alexander Shire Council’s director of infrastructure and development, said council would conduct maintenance works on the Mostyn Street bus shelter as soon as possible.
“We have temporarily removed the panels for public safety,” Ms Howard said.
“New panels are currently being manufactured. Once they are ready, council will install polycarbonate panels on the upper sides sections and solid panels to the rear and on the lower sides.
“We are working to get this project completed so bus users will have better protection from the weather,” she said.
