Woodend residents are being urged to dig into their wool stashes and pull out their crochet hooks to help create the town’s Christmas tree this year.
In 2019, the Woodend Traders enlisted the support of a local, Adam Bucholtz, to create a large metal-framed Christmas tree. This year’s vision will see the frame cloaked in a huge crocheted blanket of individual colourful squares, each contributed by the town’s residents.
Catherine Bartlett, Woodend Traders’ president and owner of kitchenware store, Mort and Pestle, said the tree would play to the town’s creative strengths.
“We were all disappointed to miss out on the Woodend Winter Arts Festival this year, but the town has managed to keep its artistic spirit alive with a fantastic display of yarnbombing around the library precinct and beyond,” Catherine said.
“It’s that creative spark that we’re drawing on this year as we emerge from winter and head towards our Christmas festivities.
“We want this year to be memorable for all the right reasons, so we’re joining with the community to create what we hope will be a tree that is truly ‘us’.”
Crocheted granny squares should measure 20cm x 20cm (8″ x 8″) and be bordered in green.
Completed squares and donations of wool for the town’s crocheters can be dropped off to Macedon Ranges Dry Cleaners, Mort and Pestle or the Woodend Newsagency.
