Festival bursts into life

Award-winning South Sudanese singer-songwriter and activist Ajak Kwai opened the Castlemaine State Festival in 2021.

Award-winning South Sudanese singer-songwriter and activist Ajak Kwai delighted the Castlemaine State Festival opening night crowd with her funky afro-beats and extraordinary voice in a sold out show on the main stage at Castlemaine’s Western Reserve on Friday evening.
The performance was also live-streamed and shared via a live radio cross by MainFM so those at home could also be part of the opening night celebrations.
As part of the very special world premiere performance, Kwai was joined by Riel Dë Nyiër – a musical arrangement featuring live acapella chants matched with dramatic percussion and the Bendigo South Sudanese Women’s Ensemble.
The invigorating and soulful performance was a wonderful way to kickstart the 17-day festival, which features a myriad of incredible creative experiences for festival goers of all ages. To find out more visit castlemainefestival.com.au. Photo: Diana Domonkos
