Malmsbury residents have been given the green light to hold a monthly farmers market on the town’s village green.
The inaugural market kicks off on September 15 after positive meetings with the council and VicRoads confirmed support for the proposal.
The plan had earlier hit a snag when organisers were told a $700 monthly fee for traffic management was required by Regional Roads Victoria (formerly VicRoads) to establish a 40km/h temporary speed limit along the main street on market days.
But at a meeting last Thursday, the group was relieved to have a promise of assistance from RRV with the first market and ongoing planning for a less costly solution for future markets.
RRV regional director Brian Westley said RRV was continuing to work with the local community and council to find a solution.
“Keeping everyone safe is our highest priority and we carefully consider all speed limits and event traffic management plans on a case-by-case basis to ensure any proposed changes are safe, consistent and appropriate for drivers, motorcyclists and pedestrians,” Mr Westley said.
A petition is also circulating around town for the speed limit along the 600 metres of Mollison Street adjacent to the village green to be permanently reduced to 40km/h.
Local Sue Love said she and other organisers, along with market manager Meggs Hannes, were thrilled the farmers market was given the go ahead.
“It’s just wonderful, we’ve got a lot of empty shops at the moment so this should be a good boost for the spirit of the town,” Ms Love said.
