A different kind of advent calendar aims to bring cheer to Macedon Ranges families in need this Christmas.
Woodend Neighbourhood House is inviting locals to take part in the reverse advent calendar project.
Unlike a regular advent calendar where the focus is on receiving a treat every day, the reverse advent calendar takes the focus off receiving and places the focus on giving to others.
It begins as an empty box or basket and for 20 days in the lead up to Christmas one item is placed into the box each day.
After 20 days the filled reverse advent calendar is dropped off to Woodend Neighbourhood House where it will be forwarded to people in the community who are experiencing food insecurity and hardship.
“This year more than ever we need to dig deep and give a little Christmas spirit to everyone,” manager Melissa Baker said.
Items must be non-perishable, toiletries, toys, books or something to give a little Christmas cheer. All items must be new and sealed or packaged due to COVID-19 restrictions.
All boxes must be returned by December 21 at 3pm to give the team time to deliver to families before Christmas.
If anyone knows of a family or individual doing it tough this year, they are encouraged to notify the Neighbourhood House, which may be able to assist with their needs.
The Neighbourhood House reopened its doors at the end of November and the team is excited to welcome the community back. The House will close for a brief period over Christmas (December 23) and will reopen in January.
