Young interns celebrate new designs

The Youth Take Over interns are pictured in their 'Ambient Street Wear' designs with Josh and Jasper of Oni Street Wear.

Interns from not-for-profit organisation Youth Take Over Loddon Campaspe ‘took over’ Castlemaine’s Oni Street Wear last Saturday for the launch of their ‘Ambient Street Wear’ designs.

YTO is a facilitated work experience that introduces youth to mentors who can help them on their career journey. The ‘Design Your Own Streetwear Label’ Take Over saw a group of young people aged between 14-25 working with Josh Salmon and Jasper Storer-Reeves from Oni Street Wear to create a clothing line of their very own.

Saturday’s event saw the group unveil their ‘Ambient Street Wear’ clothing designs, the beginning of Castlemaine’s newest brand of local talent.

Oni Street Wear proprietor Josh Salmon said the Youth Take Over team worked together to organise the exhibition and launch event.

“In doing so, they have also gained team-working skills, the ability to self-manage, and a boost in self-confidence,” he said.

“It was fantastic to see the community turn out to marvel at their clever ideas, creative thinking, and superb designs and have the chance to buy their shirts to support the up-and-coming designers.

“Most of the participants have created two designs, one will be available in store and the second will be available online.

“Young people deserve a chance to upskill, fill the gaps in their resumes from the past few years, and have fun doing it,” he said.

To check out the new designs and find out how to support these local young people by ordering an ‘Ambient Street Wear’ shirt featuring one of their designs, head to Oni Street Wear at 71 Forest Street, Castlemaine.
