Castlemaine Farmers Market is calling for volunteers to greet visitors to the monthly market, offer information and support more than 60 diverse vendors.
The market, which is held on the first Sunday of every month, initially appealed to Pamela Haywood, a committee member, because of her interest in food and fresh produce.
“As a self-confessed foodie I answered a call for volunteers at the local Farmers Market – something I was passionate about,” she said.
“It forced me to shop and buy local and support farmers and producers.”
Pam said the market was a great way to make new friends and get to know the community for new Castlemaine residents.
“When I moved from interstate I knew no one in Castlemaine,” she said.
“I became a volunteer at the Information Centre as it connected me to the community and gave me an opportunity to learn more about the area and make friends.”
For Pam, volunteering has improved her quality of life, and helped her through the dark days of COVID-19 lockdowns.
“Volunteering improves mental and physical health. When there were restrictions we were socially distanced and outside. The market was essential,” she said.
Now, Pam is calling for locals to step up and support farmers and producers.
“We need volunteers at our monthly Farmers Market – just an hour or so of your time – selling raffle tickets and offering local information and maybe helping set up our proposed food tours in the coming months,” she said.
Pam is hoping to begin running food tours at the market, with guides leading groups through stalls and listening to the stories of the fascinating vendors. For tourists visiting town from Melbourne or elsewhere, a local-led journey through the diverse range of stalls selling gorgeous fresh produce will be valuable.
“Give a little of your time and get a lot back,” Pam said.
