Golf swings big for research

The Rotary Club of Kyneton has raised $10,000 for prostate cancer research following a successful charity golf day in February.

The event, held at the Kyneton Golf Club, drew strong community support with 10 businesses sponsoring between $500 and $1500 and dozens more donating prizes and auction items.

“Our main aim was to highlight prostate cancer, one of the most common cancers among men, because early detection makes such a difference,” said Rotary special projects director Karel Turang.

Highlights included an energetic charity auction run by Brendan Coxon of Elders, with hotly contested items such as botanical paintings by local artist Vaughan Monk and Kyneton Golf Club caps signed by Team Australia LIV Golf in Singapore.

Medical experts also played a key role. Dr Tony Markis from Paradigm Urology Bendigo spoke to Rotarians about risk factors and the importance of regular screening, while Springs Medical’s Dr James Smith and Dr Brad Dwyer shared information with guests during the fundraiser lunch.

Last week, Dr Mark Harrison, CEO of the Australian Prostate Centre in North Melbourne, addressed the club on the latest research and accepted the $10,000 cheque.

Past club president Helen Keane said it showed what could be achieved when people came together for an important cause.

“The generosity of the Kyneton community was amazing,” she said.
