Shoe recycling proves a hit

Kyneton Shoes and Accessories is encouraging locals to recycle shoes that are past their prime.

Owners Andrew and Geraldine Ramselaar said that, in partnership with Macedon Ranges Council, they were excited to offer a recycle option for shoes that would otherwise be thrown in the bin.

“We encourage people to donate good pre-loved shoes to op shops, but anything looking a little worse off can be dropped off here,” Geraldine said.

“The council approached us and asked us if they could provide a bin where people could recycle their old shoes. In less than a week it was three quarters full!”

Geraldine said the council took the shoes to the textile bin at the transfer station, where Southern Cross Recycling Group collected and sorted them and shipped them offshore to be recycled or repurposed.

“The feedback from people has been fantastic. Any shoes — heels, flats, flippers, runners or boots — no questions asked!” she said.

Kyneton Shoes and Accessories is located at 23 High Street, Kyneton. Open Monday to Saturday.
