Building kids’ social skills

Harcourt families are invited to join a new supported playgroup at Harcourt Preschool, launching on Friday October 10.

The two-hour sessions are free and run weekly for families with children aged 0-5.

The sessions are facilitated by Aurora Ricci, a trained early childhood professional using the Smalltalk parenting support program.

Ms Ricci, the council’s supported playgroup facilitator, said supported playgroups helped children aged 0–5 build strong language, social and cognitive skills, with benefits lasting into their school years.

“The free weekly sessions support parenting, improve child–carer interactions, and connect families to local services,” she said.

By delivering the supported playgroup program in this environment, the council is helping ensure a smoother transition for children as they prepare to commence kindergarten.

“The supported playgroup program brings so much depth to the work we’re doing,” said Maz, teacher of the three-year-old kindergarten.

“Children and families will be supported even before they start kinder. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

Harcourt playgroup, operating from the Uniting Church for over 40 years, has long been a pillar of the community.

The new playgroup builds on this legacy, adding fresh value for local families who have shared their enthusiasm.

Cecelia described playgroup as “a big welcoming hug,” while Austin said it was “a fantastic activity for our children to play and learn with others and a valuable way for parents to connect and build friendships”.

Fridays, 9.30am to 11.30am (during school terms only) at Harcourt Preschool, Cnr Bingham and Mills Roads, Harcourt

The playgroup is free and snacks are provided.
