Do you fancy yourself to be an exceptional speller? Can you recite all those grammatical rules we learned at school – “i before e except after c” – in your sleep? Are you always wondering if embarrassing has one r or two? Then it’s time to test your spelling prowess against your friends at the third annual Adult Spelling Bee to be hosted by the Castlemaine Library on Thursday July 26!
Participants will be drawn at random from the audience to demonstrate their skills on the stage, with a new group of spellers taking part in each of the four rounds. But beware – after the initial immunity round, one mistake results in elimination!
The last speller standing wins a great prize, while MC Adam Ford will make sure spellers adhere to the rules and keep them on their toes.
Castlemaine Library manager Jess Saunders said this year’s event aimed first and foremost to be lots of fun for both audience and participants alike!
“The aim of the event is for people to have a bit of fun, so the words will be commonly misspelled words that are tricky, but not too tricky! It’s great to be able to engage our library users in a different way, to stretch our thinking and have a laugh at the same time,” Ms Saunders said.
“People keep telling me that computers have ruined their ability to be able to spell, but I think that we are all better than we think we are! Ironically, did you know that one of the most commonly misspelled words is misspell?”
Everyone who comes along will have the opportunity to complete a spelling test, so even if you aren’t chosen for the stage, there will still be a chance to win a book voucher from Stoneman’s Bookroom and to spell some long words. Be prepared for some questions on modern-day lingo too!
The Adult Spelling Bee will run from 5.30pm-6.30pm. Entry is free, and light refreshments will be provided.
