Some started work on their entries months ago, others will throw something in at the last minute, but whatever you do, don’t miss out on entering the Kyneton Show on November 16 and 17.
There’s something for everyone, regardless of age or skill. It could be something from your garden, kids’ craft, your chook’s eggs, your favourite recipe. And if there isn’t a category, they’ll invent one!
Kyneton’s Hardy family will all be entering.
“It makes the kids feel part of something. That’s really special,” Georgina said.
“It’s about being at the show and being part of Kyneton, especially because we commute to Melbourne to work and Castlemaine to school.”
She said husband John had to be persuaded in the first year.
“I did it first to encourage the kids,” he said.
“The reaction from my peers was, ‘I didn’t know adults can enter Lego’ and now I have got friends all participating so there’s a little bit of healthy rivalry on the Lego front.
“Now there’s a bit of expectation around what I am going to do each year,” John said.
This year it will be a two-metre-long Lego extravaganza “a series of scenes from a famous film in the 1980s”.
“I am asking everyone I know what they are putting in, be it flowers or baked goods or whatever,” John said.
“I am not encouraging any more Lego though!”
Mackinley’s carrot muffins won through to the regional finals last year but Georgina stresses winning isn’t the point – and there are good lessons in losing too.
“We are not entering to win. It’s about taking your grandparents to the show, showing them the work you have done.
“I am interested to see what other people enter – but when you win it does feel quite good,” Georgina said, admitting she was “a bit emotional” when her first show entry won – the first marmalade she’d ever made.
You won’t have to wait till Show Day to find out who’s won this year.
For the first time, the pavilion will be open on Friday night, as well as Show Day.
That means new cut-off times for entries. Pavilion entries must be in by 6.30pm Tuesday November 13.
