The creative team behind the Kyneton Show has put together two big days of family fun this coming weekend for the 159th show with loads of free farming activities and things to make to take home.
See if you can make a whip crack with free lessons and demonstrations on Friday night as Keira Buzza shows off the techniques she uses in whip cracking competition around the country.
Kyneton Agricultural Society president Vincent Lakey said the show was all about value for money.
“It’s probably the most affordable show in the state,” Mr Lakey said. “And you don’t have to spend a cent inside if you’re on a budget. Just turn left and head to the netball courts when you come in the gate.”
The fun starts when the gates open at 5.30pm on Friday night with free laser tag in the haybales, the bucking bull and the Wipeout challenge, all free.
Marvel at the range of utes on the oval from best hunting rig and best feral, to the best classic and best farm or work ute. New novelty categories include ute with a boot and best mullet, while you can vote for the people’s choice prize.
Learn about different breeds of stud sheep when the MB O’Sullivan pavilion opens for the first time for the Friday night carnival.
Be the first to see who’s won Best in Show when the winners in the pavilion are revealed at 6pm before the fireworks at 9pm.
Show Day is the essence of the traditional country show.
In the pavilion, find out what the judges are looking for in every category from champion rose to home-brewed beer.
See the best of each breed up close with animals on parade from the dog show on the bottom oval to the horses strutting their stuff on the main oval with a special demonstration of harness horses after the final judging at lunchtime.
Ask about alpacas, see what makes a stud sheep, marvel at the size of a champion bull and learn the difference between soft and hard feather breeds in the poultry pavilion.
In The Farm Shed youngsters can turn plastic bottles into clever pots or hanging baskets, decorate them and then plant them with flowers or herbs to take home for free.
Watch a sheep shorn up close, guess “Whose Poo?”, try to make the longest apple core or dig for potatoes to take home to grow.
Cuddle a chick, a lamb and more with our favourite farmer in Farmer Darryl’s animal nursery, next to The Farm Shed.
Make your own truck, or your own invention, in The Farm Shed and watch the Sunbury Woodworkers Club craft wooden whistles to give away.
The farm-inspired parkour will wear out little legs with a separate obstacle course for the little ones to clamber over.
A family pass for two adults and up to four children is $30, $50 for both days.
