Drivers are still flouting the law when it comes to passing emergency vehicles with flashing lights and local police are stepping up enforcement.
A law passed on July 1 last year means drivers must to slow to 40km/h when passing an emergency vehicle with flashing lights to improve safety.
Highway Patrol’s Sergeant Geoff Annand said despite the time drivers had had to familiarise themselves with the law most “still don’t seem to be aware”.
“We’re seeing a lack of compliance and this probably rings true for all emergency vehicles,” he said.
“We will be stepping up enforcement in this area – for some people driving on freeways this will mean if they do not obey the 40km/h rule, it may lead to their vehicle being impounded.”
From last week, marked local police cars were fitted with stickers across the back windscreen as a reminder to all approaching drivers to slow down.
Leading Senior Constable Georgie Thompson said reducing speed to 40km/h was a small consideration that could make a huge difference.
“We’re protecting the community 24/7, all we ask is for one minute of your day to protect us when you see the flashing lights,” she said.
