Local firies joined the fight at Bunyip State Park and Gippsland firegrounds last week.
A Macedon Ranges strike team with firefighters from across the district was in force, as well as crews from Harcourt and Campbells Creek and CFA members from Castlemaine and Newstead.
The strike team comprised members from the Coliban and Mountain brigade groups with tankers from Mount Macedon, Kyneton, Romsey, Clarkefield and Gisborne, and Riddells Creek’s forward control vehicle. More than 50 volunteers rotated shifts.
Harcourt and Campbells Creek brigades each responded with a crew of five on Sunday and worked overnight to help control spot fires.
Campbells Creek Fire Brigade captain Malcolm Murdoch said the decision to offer support was easy.
“We are always happy to travel to fires and help out. If something was to happen here we would get people coming to help. We all work together as needed, it’s just what we do,” Capt Murdoch said.
Along with local CFA crews, more than 70 Forest Fire Management Victoria firefighters from central Victoria and the Mallee were deployed.
FFMVic regional manager Allyson Lardner said 51 of the 77 firefighters were from central Victorian regions including Macedon and Castlemaine.
She said four firefighter taskforces were sent to provide immediate coverage for firefighters that had already been fighting the fires for some time.
Ms Lardner said the crews worked in difficult conditions building rake-hoe lines, patrolling and extinguishing hot spots.
