Women’s Health Loddon Mallee is celebrating International Women’s Day 2021 by offering a free online screening of recently released film Brazen Hussies this Thursday.
The critically acclaimed feature-length documentary celebrates the legacy of the bold women of the Women’s Liberation Movement who re-ignited the feminist revolution in Australia (1965-1975).
Interweaving freshly uncovered archival footage, personal photographs, memorabilia and lively personal accounts from activists, Brazen Hussies shows how a daring and diverse group of women joined forces to defy the status quo, demand equality and create profound social change – contributing to one of the greatest social movements of the 20th Century.
Examining the past, Brazen Hussies reveals how the changes demanded by these women 50 years ago, have paved the way for where the gender equity movement finds itself today.
While the landscape, breadth and diversity of feminism is vastly different today – without this movement and the changes it achieved, we wouldn’t be where we are now.
Recording and celebrating this important history, offers a valuable opportunity to reassess and discuss where we are at as a society, what gains have been made, what is at risk and where we are headed.
The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is ‘Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world’, with women across the globe calling for a better and more equal future for women and girls.
The live screening event is open to all residents of the Loddon Mallee Region and will be taking place on Thursday March 4 at 7.30pm.
Those unable to attend the live screening will be able to view the film online, anytime up until Wednesday March 10.
To ensure the screening is accessible to all, WHLM are offering the online screening event on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis. Members of the public can view the film at no charge, or if circumstance allows, they are invited to make a donation to the Weenthunga Health Network upon registration.
Weenthunga contributes to health equity and justice for First Nations people across Victoria and actively supports young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to pursue careers in health.
