Dogs of the vines

Our 2021 Wine Trail magazine is out now and has some gorgeous four-legged ambassadors we’d like to share.
Among the many ‘dogs of the vines’ featured, Lily and Clive have the job at Coliban Valley Vineyard of chasing pesky birds out from under the protective netting.
Needless to say Lily and Clive, english pointers who are beautifully gentle, can get rid of quite a deal of their boundless energy at this time of the year.
After they have taken care of the birds, they dash to the dam to cool off with a swim. Of course, when it’s not netting time they have their work cut out welcoming visitors to the winery and keeping tabs on their human friends, Helen and Greg Miles.
Over at Mount Macedon Winery, golden retriever Gus has a social life most people would envy, let alone other dogs!
He gets to attend every wedding hosted at the winery – and they are aplenty – and with that comes all the adoration that every dog deserves. At times for these formal events, Gus even dons one of his enviable collection of bow ties and tuxedos.
When formalities are done for the week, Gus spends his time going for swims in the dams, lazing about in the sun and getting pats from all dog-loving guests who visit Mount Macedon Winery’s restaurant.
Zig Zag Winery’s Nelly is a winery girl through and through. She’s a gorgeous friendly border collie who is gentle with everyone. When Harriet and Henry Churchill took over the winery a few year back, she was not supposed to come with the farm. She lived there with Zig Zag’s previous owners and one day when they came back for a visit, Nelly decided she did not want to go back with them to live on their town-sized block. She put her paws firmly down and refused to leave her old farm and has stayed there ever since.
She is the doorbell for the cellar door as she barks when anyone turns into the drive so the Churchills know when visitors have arrived. It worked out perfectly for Harriet and Henry who really wanted a dog but didn’t have the time to train one up, and so Nelly became part of their family and is firmly and determinedly part of the vineyard’s heritage!
