Kyneton Town Hall is lighting up with Ukraine’s colours for seven days as a show of support and respect for the war-torn nation.
The blue and yellow light display began on Friday, following Macedon Ranges Shire councillors unanimous support for the move at the ordinary meeting for April.
“We want to show that this council stands with the people of Ukraine and supports them totally against the aggression that is happening (in their country) at the moment,” Macedon Ranges deputy mayor Rob Guthrie said.
The motion acknowledged the council stands with the people of Ukraine and that the council will provide assistance to Ukrainian refugees who are seeking shelter in the Macedon Ranges.
It also expressed gratitude and thanks to members of the community, not for profit organisations, government agencies, telecommunications companies and council staff who are providing aid to Ukrainian refugees arriving with limited resources.
Mayor Jennifer Anderson said lighting up the hall was a small way the council could show respect and support.
“There couldn’t be a citizen out there that doesn’t know what’s happening in the Ukraine at the moment and to have those those colours there will let people know that we are very much aware of the plight of these people and that we’re providing support,” she said.
Macedon Ranges resident Victor Zablockyj, who has family and friends in the Ukraine, said the display was a huge heartfelt show of support from our Macedon Ranges community for the Ukrainian people.
The light display will continue until Thursday May 12.
