$200k boost for vet clinic

The Regional Community Vet Clinic held another successful session on Sunday with additional help from Vets for Compassion, another volunteer organisation.

Regional Community Vet Clinic has received a $200,000 grant from the state government via the Animal Welfare Grant program to establish regional Victoria’s first community vet clinic in Mount Alexander Shire.

RCVC is a not-for-profit veterinary clinic and will provide the elderly, socially and financially disadvantaged in the community access to affordable preventative veterinary care for their companion animals. This will include supporting the most vulnerable to continue to live in their own homes with companion animals.

RCVC co-founder and treasurer Robyn Slattery said they were thrilled to be successful in obtaining the grant.

The news comes as the group held another successful session on Sunday, assisting community members with the desexing of their cats. The funding will help the group build a dedicated home to continue their work.

“We recognise the importance of companion animals in maintaining individuals’ physical and mental wellbeing,” Robyn said.

“By supporting the health and wellbeing of pets, we reduce owner anxiety and increase overall health and wellbeing.

“By enabling access to affordable preventative veterinary care our aim is to legitimise the importance of animal companionship for people experiencing various forms of disadvantage,” she said.

RCVC is dedicated to proving this wellbeing to Mount Alexander Shire residents initially, and the greater region in the coming years.

“We are encouraging and welcoming the community to join us to achieve this first for regional Victoria,” Robyn said.

The estimated building cost of the clinic is $400k, and the group is now embarking on a campaign to raise the balance of the funds needed.
