Newstead 2021 has received a grant of $19,799 to create a new community space on the old railway platform.
The funds will allow the community group to add lighting, power points, heating and lightweight stackable chairs to enable the space to be used year-round. Small storage spaces will be replaced with new storage systems so volunteers can safely pack away display and event equipment.
Newstead 2021 has been supporting the local community since 2008 with a number of projects including a community garden, the Newstead Arts Hub, and building local walking and cycling tracks.
Spokesperson Gen Barlow told the Express the group was delighted to receive the grant, which would assist them to move into the next phase.
“We will be renaming the group shortly as there is a long life ahead, with a number of things in the community plan to still be completed,” Ms Barlow said.
Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards announced the successful grant last week.
“I would like to congratulate Newstead 2021 on their initiative and work on this project,” Ms Edwards said.
“Newstead 2021 was established to support the development of a vibrant, informed and sustainable community. They have been the driving force behind Renewable Newstead and other projects within the township.”
As part of her announcement, Ms Edwards also made a further commitment to support Newstead 2021 with a $100,000 grant if the Labor government is re-elected.
