In March 2021, the creative capital of central Victoria, Kyneton, will be immersed in unexpected artforms for the second iteration of the Kyneton Contemporary Art Triennial.
Presented by local arts collective Kyneton Contemporary Inc., and taking place over nine days, KCAT (pronounced kay-CAT) celebrates the work of 11 contemporary Australian artists.
The event’s theme is Holding the Circle – an intersection of contemporary art, community, transmission and exchange – with the town of Kyneton at the core of inspiration.
New works by artists Ravi Avasti, Hannah Brontë, Michael Candy, Adam Lee, Eugenia Lim, Emily Parsons-Lord and Sara Morawetz, Steven Rhall, Simone Slee, Hanna Tai, and Katie West will be presented across a variety of unconventional sites across the town of Kyneton.
Intriguing and unexpected site-specific installations including sound, sculpture, painting, new media and performance will activate familiar locations while also providing curious art-lovers with access to places not normally open to public access.
Expect to experience art in a small country hall, a post-industrial factory, an abandoned historic building or even a motel room. The popular Stockroom Gallery on historic Piper Street will be a key site to see art, and be part of workshops and events.
Leading up to KCAT, artists are invited to spend time in Kyneton, getting to know the local community, observing the character, ecology and culture of the town; a platform for inspiration, research and ideas for new work created specifically for the 2021 event.
Public programming, talks, workshops and events, will support the exhibitions around the township providing further insight into the artists and the nature of their art.
A special publication detailing the art presented in the inaugural KCAT has also been released.
Force Fields: Art, Architecture and Audience documents the first KCAT, which featured the work of 10 exciting Australian artists presented in primarily unconventional exhibition sites across the township of Kyneton.
Edited by Kent Wilson and Clare Needham and featuring essays and creative texts by exhibiting artists as well as Andrew Frost, Clare Needham, Jessica Bridgfoot, Kent Wilson, Meg Slater, Melinda Rackham and Paul Hedley Roberts.
