Another assault at Malmsbury YJC

A Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre staff member was assaulted in yet another attack by an inmate yesterday.
A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokesperson confirmed the incident occurred but said paramedics were not required to attend.

“A staff member has been transported to hospital for assessment and Victoria Police were notified,” the spokesperson said.
“The safety of staff and young people in youth justice is our utmost priority – violent behaviour isn’t tolerated, which is why there are strict laws in place that ensure tough consequences for young people who assault custodial workers.
“Victoria takes a zero-tolerance approach to violence and assaults in youth justice centres. All incidents and allegations are referred to Victoria Police.”

The incident follows a recent assault on a worker at the MYJC in July in which the victim suffered serious upper body injuries.
Community and Public Sector Union Victoria spokesperson Karen Batt said that the union could not tolerate the recent increase in assaults on staff at the centre.

“These staff are vulnerable if left without support at the critical time around evening lockdowns,” Ms Batt said.
“These recent assaults undermine the confidence that was growing among staff seen through less absenteeism saw most shifts being returned to full staffing.

“One step forward but then multiple steps backwards at times and it’s making it harder every day for staff.
“These violent few need to be charged and removed otherwise the safety of all inside is placed in jeopardy.”
