Championship in his sights

Fourth-generation woodchopper Blake Meyer is taking on the STIHL Timbersports Australian Trophy Championship.

Fourth-generation Romsey axeman Blake Meyer is sharpening his focus on the STIHL Timbersports Australian Trophy Championship next month.

The 14-time Victorian Tree Felling Champion will take on a series of fast-paced time-trial events for the championship in Adelaide.

Blake will compete in three back-to-back traditional woodchopping disciplines: underhand chop, STIHL stock saw and single buck saw.

He hasn’t competed since pre-pandemic but has had plenty of time to prepare and is eager to get back to the chopping block.

“I’m looking forward to it. Victoria has been left behind with competitions during the pandemic,” he told the Express.

Blake began competing at the age of eight alongside his brother and in the footsteps of his grandfather and father. Both his father and brother continue to compete.

“It’s been a passion of mine for a little while,” Blake said.

Learning from his past, the now 27-year-old has focused more time training on fitness rather than individual event practise in the lead up to the event.

While the competition will be physically demanding, the last hurdle will be Blake’s specialty, which could position him well for a strong finish.

Blake will have support in the crowd with his wife Zoe and 13-month-old daughter Charlotte cheering him on.
