Live music to celebrate IWD

Allie Hanley (MainFM), Steph Riddel (MainFM), Hannah Blackburn, Zeb Olsen (K5), Fionna Allan (Music Victoria) and Jess Parker are looking forward to collaborating on the live music event at Castlemaine's Village Square on International Women's Day.

Music Victoria and MainFM are joining forces to present a free live music event in Castlemaine’s Village Square next Tuesday, in celebration of International Women’s Day.

The event will be held on Djarra Country and feature a live broadcast from 4pm of MainFM’s Corduroy Cabana radio program.

Corduroy Cabana has been hitting the airwaves on MainFM since 2018, and is presented by local youths, Chloe, Rita and Saskia, on Tuesday evenings.

An Acknowledgment of Country will precede the live sets from Castlemaine locals Hannah Blackburn, Jess Parker and K5.
Hannah Blackburn’s folk/rock/pop amalgamation draws inspiration from artists like Margaret Glaspy, Waxahatchee and Angel Olsen with Patsy Cline a childhood staple.

Having released a series of singles and EPs, Hannah’s debut album is due out later in 2022.

Hannah recently graced the stage at Town Folk Festival, and played shows with Quivers in Melbourne and Castlemaine.

Describing herself as an Earth-wandering, guitar-slingin’ whisky drinker from Campbells Creek, Jess Parker is due to release her third album ‘Bread and Butter’ in May.

Her music has been described as “a soulful, mournful sound ripped straight from the pages of the book on Mississippi blues. Be careful to listen closely, or you may miss the subtle yet surreal lyrics that makes Jess’s stripped-back and personal performance a must see”.

K5 is a three-piece band from Castlemaine that formed in 2019. Zeb from Matrimony plays guitar and sings, Nicole from RRR’s Respect the Rock plays bass and Julia from the library hits the drums.

K5 recently supported Cable Ties at the Theatre Royal, and regularly plays shows in Melbourne, Bendigo and beyond. The band released its debut album, Pomona, in January 2021.

Music Victoria’s regional music coordinator for Mount Alexander Shire Fionna Allan said it was a real privilege to be able to collaborate with MainFM on the International Women’s Day event.

“It’s a joy to program such an awesome selection of talented locally based musicians,” Fionna said.

“It’s also great to be able to present a free event at a time of day that allows a huge cross-section of the community to attend.”

MainFM station manager Steph Riddel said MainFM was excited to co-present and broadcast the event live on air as part of the station’s ongoing collaboration with Mount Alexander Shire and The Village Square.

“MainFM is passionate about supporting local talent, and joining forces with Music Victoria is just one more great opportunity to do so, through the artists and the young radio presenters,” Steph said.

This event is part of the Regional Music Development Program, funded by Creative Victoria and delivered in partnership with Music Victoria and Regional Arts Victoria and supported by Mount Alexander Shire Council.
