While supermarket giant Woolworths was in the national news last week due to its ongoing union negotiations concerning workers at four of its distribution centres, the Castlemaine supermarket build continued to forge ahead.
The first official Woolworths signage was installed on the building last Wednesday and Thursday.
Local history buff and photographer David Williamson has been documenting the project every step of the way and was on hand to snap the moment the first signs went up on the Duke Street and Forest Street facades.
Williamson has enjoyed a number of onsite tours with builders Maben the most recent on November 22.
He said the supermarket was quickly taking shape.
“When the fit out by Woolworths is complete the retail department will feature 17 aisles, a bakery and delicatessen,” he said.
“There will be three EV charging stations near the Click & Collect bay.
“The supermarket will require 130 retail staff and approximately 30 in the goods delivery department total 30.”

It was previously estimated that the new offering and the adjoining specialty shops, which include BWS, would open by Christmas, but the store is now forecast to open around Easter 2025.
