Castlemaine’s undisputed Weimar kabarett punk provocateur Bernie Dieter is set to take over North Melbourne’s historic Meat Market with ‘Club Kabarett’ from this Thursday.

Dieter, hailed as an ‘electrifying cross between Lady Gaga, Marlene Dietrich and Frank-N-Furter in sequins’, is renowned for her riotous original songs, immense vocal talent, and flair for debaucherous mayhem and has stunned, aroused and terrified audiences and critics worldwide for more than a decade.

Inspired by the historic Berlin 1920s pre-war burgeoning Weimar kabarett scene, Bernie’s modern-day den of iniquity ‘Club Kabarett’ is a wild gender-bending place of sexual freedom and celebration of difference.

Club Kabarett is more than just a show, it’s a triumphant revolt against the mundane, where audiences will be astounded, shocked and entertained by a dizzying collection of the most exceptional artists in the world including contortionists, sword swallowers, fire breathers and incredible aerialists.

The performance is all set to the soundtrack of Bernie’s incredible vocals and her debauched gin-soaked haus band. This wickedly funny show is described as a life-affirming lightning bolt of pure, unadulterated joy.

Bernie told the Express she was born in Germany but had called Castlemaine home for the last four years.

“My mum is German and my dad is Australian. When I am not touring I love returning home here to Castlemaine,” she said.

“We have an incredibly talented arts community. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the recent Castlemaine Fringe opening party, and we have wonderful venues such as the Theatre Royal and The Bridge bringing world class talent to Castlemaine,” she said.

“A lot of my performer friends from across the globe also enjoy taking time out between shows at our home in Castlemaine. “It’s a beautiful welcoming community.

“I also live just down the road from two inspiring studios so it’s the perfect place to create new works.”

Bernie is excited to be bringing Club Kabarett back to Melbourne after a whirlwind 12 months that included a critically acclaimed three-month season in London’s West End, a tour of Japan, headlining Fringe World 2025 in Perth, Auckland Festival and the Sziget Festival in Budapest.

“Melbourne is such a vibrant city that really reminds me of Berlin in the way it celebrates the arts and the beautiful punks, freaks and weirdos of this world. The show feels so at home there, and we have been busy transforming the beautiful historic Meat Market into our very own back-alley Berlin kabarett club. It’s going to be one hell of a party!”

The show runs through until May 11.

But be warned, this limited season will sell out fast, so don’t be left crying into your feather boas – secure your seats now!
