Old ‘Res’ needs some TLC

A project is under way to explore options for strengthening the dam wall of Expedition Pass Reservoir, near Castlemaine.

The project, supported by a $6.2 million state government investment, will help ensure the ‘Res’ remains safe for residents and visitors who enjoy visiting the tranquil swimming hole located in the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park.

Constructed in 1868 to supply water to Chewton and Castlemaine, the the capacity of the water was severely impacted by silting by 1874 and an alternative supply from the Coliban River was secured.

Since then, the reservoir has become a popular place for locals and tourists. A significant number of people visit the park and Expedition Pass across the warmer months to enjoy its cool waters, canoe, fish and picnic around its banks.

Parks Victoria regularly monitors dams across to ensure they meet dam management guidelines, which resulted in an independent engineering assessment. The assessment found the 156-year-old reservoir required some work to ensure the integrity of the dam wall should a heavy flooding event occur.

Reviews of historical records of the area and on-site assessments, the first stage of the heritage assessment, have been completed. The outcomes of these assessments will help the design team identify any areas that may require specific protection zones during the works.

are responsible for developing the design of the upgrade options and determine the likely impact areas during construction.

Over the coming months a number of on-site investigations are planned, including survey and geotechnical investigations. Portable toilets will be placed on site during this time.

These investigations will help to inform final design options for the upgrade.

Work on upgrading the dam wall is expected to start in 2026 and finish in 2027 (this timeline is subject to on-ground and construction industry conditions, and environmental and cultural heritage assessments) and there will be temporary access changes throughout the duration of the project.

During the upcoming investigation phase, access to some areas will be restricted. Once these are confirmed, signs will be installed onsite and updated information provided on the Parks Victoria website.
