The Telstra branch in Gisborne has permanently closed down after a spate of crime hit its store, meaning the town’s residents will have to travel to Metropolitan areas to receive in-store service.
The closest branches are located in Sunbury and Melton.
Telstra’s regional general manager, Steve Tinker, told the Express crime was one of many contributing factors behind the decision to close down the store.
“Following a serious break-in at our Telstra Gisborne store at the start of August – and in light of previous incidents at this location – we’ve made the decision not to reopen the store,” Mr Tinker said.
“There were a number of contributing factors into the decision to close this store, including the challenging current retail environment, leasing and staff considerations, store viability and changing consumer habits. The wellbeing of our team members and customers is our top priority, and we remain committed to supporting our community through our other locations and services.
“As a result of this closure, our Telstra Gisborne team members will be redeployed to an alternative store.”
The decision comes amid the expanded 4G and 5G mobile coverage throughout Kyneton and near future plans to do the same in Pipers Creek.
