Woodend’s Luke Kirby has claimed the national dressage (secondary) all abilities class title at the Australian Interschool Championships.

He joined more than 100 student riders as part of team Victoria to compete at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre last month.

Luke, 18, has autism, a moderate intellectual disability, very little language and epilepsy. He may face challenges, but his growth, determination and passion for riding has been inspiring.

His mother Andrea said all ability classes were added to the program just six weeks before the event and Luke was proud to join.

“Luke was so excited to represent his state. When he got the cap and uniform he was so proud,” she said.

“His instructor Mark had just six weeks to teach Luke the two tests and did an outstanding job.”

In the lead up to the big event, Luke trained three days a week under the guidance of Riddells Creek-based Mark Kenzig at his Northampton Dale Australia property.

Andrea called the dressage tests for Luke on the day and there cheering him on was his support worker Rachel and her partner Mark.

Andrea described the event as “just magical”.

“Everyone at the event went above and beyond to include the students with special needs. It was such a beautiful thing to be part of,” she said.

“The organisers did an amazing job — it was just like a mini Olympics. Luke was so good: he just soaked in all that atmosphere and team spirit.”

Luke represented Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Specialist School at Equestrian Victoria Interschool State Championships in both show and dressage events in April.

He has a unique bond with warmblood Shabria Secret Powers who has been with him through many events.

As Luke prepares to graduate secondary school, this was both his first and final opportunity to represent Victoria at the Australian Interschool Championships.

Luke attends Woodlands Pony Club and competes regularly at local shows and events. Next in his sights is exploring equestrian activities through the Virtus program.
