Romsey project skating ahead

Romsey Primary School principal Melanie Stewart, student prize winners Ailey, Wade, Leah, Honey, Millie, Zoe and Bryce, Lancefield Romsey Lions Club members Ged and Wendie McLaughlin, Bendigo Bank's Jodie Peacock and Kyle Brightside from Creative Sparks Projects.

Construction has begun on the new Romsey Skatepark with completion expected early next year.

The impressive design includes a large bowl, quarter pipe, pump track and a series of hips and corners, as well as shade shelters, seating, lighting, landscaping and pathways.

It has been 11 years in the making and a big-focus project for Lancefield Romsey Lions Club and has had strong community input at every stage: from special features to artwork.

Last week, Romsey Primary School students named the skatepark’s koala mascot Olly — synonymous with a skating move.

Students took part in a competition to name the character and seven winners were announced last week.

Young people and local residents have also been a key part of a mural design now taking shape at the skatepark’s toilet block.

Working alongside Kyle Brightside, from Creative Sparks Projects, local residents have helped create the mural’s theme and even been involved with the painting.

The work features native flora and fauna including a black cockatoo, gum leaves and kookaburra, around the theme of intergenerational connection and unity. Of course, Olly the koala will also be featured.

The Romsey Skatepark project gained momentum when the Lions secured $950,000 in Victorian Government funding in 2023/24.

Lancefield Romsey Community Bank helped bring the project to life with the remaining $147,180 for construction works in 2024. The bank also contributed towards the early stages of design through a $32,000 investment.

Contracts were awarded to Kyneton-based Grind Projects with skatepark design by Baseplate’s Darren White from Kyneton.

Romsey-based Newearth Constructions donated its labour to clear the site in preparation for the new skatepark.

Skating is now expected to begin at the new park by late January or early February, depending on works.
