Crash-prone road upgraded

Two cars collided and destroyed a concrete power pole at the intersection in August last year.

An intersection notorious for vehicle collisions near the Kyneton town centre recently received road safety upgrades.

The Beauchamp and Mollison Street intersection received planned safety upgrades late last year. A raised wombat crossing was installed and kerbs upgraded to improve the adjacent footpath, visibility for passers-by, and slow down oncoming traffic.

It comes after a Macedon Ranges Shire Council study in 2024 noted the two roads had an ‘unsignalised cross intersection with crash history’. It identified the need to install a roundabout at the Mollison Street/Beauchamp Street intersection as a ‘medium priority’.

A nearby resident told the Express collisions were a regular occurrence at the intersection.

“I’ve lived there for the past 15 years and have seen several major accidents and the powerlines replaced,” said the resident.

“Beauchamp Street is an extension of the freeway and cars speed through. We need a roundabout or set of lights here, to prevent casualties.”

Transport Victoria’s data, consolidated from Victoria Police and hospital records, indicate six accidents occurred at the intersection between 2014 and 2021. And more recently, the Express reported on crashes yet to be included in this data set.

This includes an incident from August last year, when two cars collided and destroyed a concrete power pole. Both drivers were treated for non-life threatening injuries and 53 residents temporarily lost power to their homes.

In another incident on Anzac Day last year, a crash was reported when a driver failed to give way and collided with another vehicle, while an organised veteran march occurred 700m down the road.
