Firefighters battled a grassfire that burnt 45 hectares at Bullengarook last Wednesday afternoon that had residents in Bullengarook, Coimadai, Gisborne and Lerderderg on alert.

More than 30 brigades turned out to with air support and Forest Fire Management Victoria to bring the blaze under control within about six hours. They continued to patrol the grounds until Friday night.

Bullengarook Fire Brigade captain Simon Hayward said the incident “stretched training, teamwork and endurance to the limit” and thanked all involved for their efforts.

“What began as a fast-moving grass fire quickly demanded a coordinated and sustained response, and the professionalism and determination shown on the fire ground were exceptional,” he said.

“As captain, I couldn’t be prouder of how our volunteers stepped up when our community needed us most. Just as critical was the tireless work behind the scenes.”

“One of the most humbling aspects of incidents like this is the support we receive from beyond our own patch. We are incredibly grateful to the crews who travelled to stand beside us. The camaraderie and seamless teamwork on the fireground made a challenging day manageable, and we sincerely thank you for your commitment and solidarity.”

Local businesses also stepped in to support with food and refreshments.
