More than 1000 Macedon Ranges ratepayers with direct debit arrangements to pay their rates were incorrectly billed twice overnight.
Adele Drago-Stevens, council’s director of corporate, said council was aware that a number of third-instalment direct debits for rates were incorrectly processed overnight. This may have resulted in duplicate debits to about 1040 ratepayers’ bank accounts.
“We understand this may cause concern or financial stress, particularly while household budgets are tight, and we apologise for the worry and inconvenience caused,” Ms Drago-Stevens said.
“We are quickly investigating the cause of this issue and working closely with our banking providers to reverse the duplicated transactions and return the additional amount to all affected ratepayers as promptly as possible.
“No immediate action is required if you notice a duplicate debit; refunds will be processed automatically once the reversal is completed, and affected ratepayers will be notified.
“Council will work directly with affected ratepayers and provide assistance where there may be fees, charges, or financial difficulties because of this issue.
“We appreciate the community’s patience while we urgently resolve this matter.”
