Precision’s double supreme

Baynton’s Precision Alpaca Group had double success at the Melbourne Royal Alpaca Show winning alpaca supreme champion in both major categories.

Exhibited by Taryan and Max Mathews, Pacofino Bacardi was awarded supreme champion Suri, and Pacofino Hyperion ET won supreme champion Huacaya.

This year the couple took a team of 25 alpacas to compete at the show where they have seen success over more 10 years.

In 2016 their now eight-year-old alpaca Yenaminut Evokateur also won supreme champion.

Precision Alpaca Group is the culmination of five studs; Bardella Park, Cuzco, Precision, Trademark and Yenaminut.

“It’s such a fun show and the alpaca community is so strong that everyone’s happy, no matter how the day went,” Taryan said.

“Half the fun of the show is you’re actually allowed to just talk alpacas for days on end.

“They’re a really fun and different species and their fibre is just incredible so I’d encourage anyone not sure of what direction they want to go in to talk to some breeders and meet the alpacas because they’ll win your heart over pretty quickly.”

Melbourne Royal’s alpaca committee chair Rochelle Veitch said the animals are dramatically increasing in popularity across Australia, with both professional producers and hobby farmers on small acreage.

Alpacas have been part of the Melbourne Royal since 1991, with 37 entries in that first year.

It has since grown to be one of the most prestigious shows in Australia, regularly hosting more than 100 exhibitors and more than 400 alpacas from all over the country.
