Stories, music, poetry combine

Musicians and poets have been reaching intimate audiences in monthly candlelit evenings of creative storytelling at Kyneton.

The Simba Sessions at the St Andrews Uniting Church create a place for inspiration, music, poetry and stories.

Two musicians and a poet take to the stage each month to approach a theme, drawing on their own experiences and influences.

Founder and MC Paul Banks began The Simba Sessions in Kyneton about two years ago to provide a creative space or ‘a gig for artists’.

“A lot of people are drawn to the atmosphere we create because it’s intimate and a church is a beautiful and respectful space,” he said.

“We’ve had artists come from all over – some from interstate. As we make more connections, we hope to involve more local artists too.”

The March session featured Aria award winner Kavisha Mazzella with John Englezos and Romaan.

For April 11, The Simba Sessions will feature musicians Tim Woods and Cate Taylor, with the evening’s poet to be confirmed.

The Simba Sessions are held at the St Andrews Uniting Church, Kyneton, at 7pm, on the second Friday of the month: April 11, May 9, June 13, July 11 and August 8. Entry is $20.
