LOCALS set to inspire

Leonie Van Eyk's film Nature Loves To Hide with John Wolseley, pictured, will feature as part of the LOCALS event.

Castlemaine Documentary Festival’s (July 4-6) beloved annual celebration of homegrown storytelling LOCALS returns to Castlemaine historic Theatre Royal on Saturday July 5.

LOCALS brings together a vibrant collection of short-form works by central Victorian filmmakers and is so popular with local audiences that tickets had just about sold out at the time of going to press!

From heartfelt to hilarious, these films offer a window into the people, places and stories that make our community unlike any other.

All films selected to screen at LOCALS are in the running for an award: Audience Choice Award, Judges’ Choice Award and an Encouragement Award. Winners receive a Black Magic Design DaVinci Resolve Studio worth $500.

LOCALS will coincide with the screening of renowned local photographer Leonie Van Eyk’s stunning film Nature Loves To Hide.

The film follows the artist John Wolseley, often in camouflage and crawling on his knees, as he paints the habitat and architecture of desert mammals, birds and reptiles.

Filmed in the Tanami, Great Sandy Desert and the Wimmera in Victoria, the film shows how the artist stealthily approaches and draws animals in their warrens, burrows, mounds, and nests.

Wolseley climbs trees near his home in Victoria to document the nests of treecreepers and tawny frogmouths. He draws burrowing bettongs and greater bilbies as they are returned to the Australian Wildlife Conservancy’s park at Newhaven, and spends hours waiting for a glimpse of Great Desert Skinks with their basking mounds, latrines and birthing pools. The event will get under way at 4.30pm. Get your ticket today at cdocff.com.au/program/nature-loves-to-hide-locals
