Celebrating music, dance and culture

Salama specialises in Maloya and Sega music from the Reunion Island region.

Castlemaine is set to host a wonderful performance of music, dance and culture from the Indian Ocean region when Salama performs at the Phee Broadway Theatre tonight at 7.30pm.

Salama is an award-winning group from Perth that specialises in Maloya and Sega music from Reunion Island and surrounds. Maloya is a 300-year-old performance tradition drawing from Malagasy, African and Tamil cultures, originating from Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean.

Lead singer, dancer Muriel Hillion Toulcanon, is familiar to Castlemaine audiences, having presented the Maloya Moshpit at the 2023 Castlemaine Festival in collaboration with Punctum Inc. This time she brings her talented group of Creole musicians from Perth to Victoria for the first time to perform two very special shows – one in Melbourne and one in Castlemaine.

Primary students from region will also experience a special workshop on the Thursday where they will learn about the special French language, culture, music and dance from Reunion Island.

These activities are proudly supported by Mount Alexander Shire Council and the West Australian Government. Tickets at: events.humanitix.com/salama-reunion-island-maloya-music
