One travel-loving family is sharing their adventures around the region through a guide that captures highlights from the Macedon Ranges and Mount Alexander.
Big Adventures for Little Legs: Northern Victoria is the family’s latest self-published full-colour guidebook, featuring 101 outdoor destinations for children.
The team has designed the book for families to get engaged in nature-based exploring with featured local sites including the Oak Forest, Specimen Gully Ruins, The Cascades, and the Enchanted Forest Railway Walk in Taradale. The book covers all the way to the NSW border.
This family of five, hailing from the Bellarine Peninsula, comprises two parents and three boys aged two, five and eight.
“We spent years doing weekend road trips and having countless ‘wow’ moments in nature, and were amazed more people weren’t heading out off the beaten path more,” a spokesperson for the Big Adventures team said.
Their travels are broken into a series by destination and northern Victorian was the first to release.
“Northern Victoria is often overlooked in favour of coastal or alpine destinations, but it’s packed with family-friendly adventures. We wanted to shine a light on all the incredible places north of the Divide — especially those that are affordable and accessible for families,” they said.
“The Macedon Ranges sit right on the divide between the north and west, so we’ve actually split this region across two books.
“For the north book, our favourite find was Conglomerate Gully in Riddells Creek — an incredible little spot that hardly anyone knows about, even with a seasonal waterfall!
“In the Mount Alexander area, it would have to be the Enchanted Forest in Taradale. It’s peaceful, magical, and ideal for kids, especially with the little fairy forest lovingly created by locals. There’s something really special about that place and we love stopping by there.”
The book is currently in pre-release, with full availability expected mid-August. It will be stocked at regional bookstores and other locales including Castlemaine Visitor Centre, and available online.
