This month, the walls of The Old Auction House in Kyneton will once again come alive with colour, courage and creativity as Queerthentic: LGBTQIA+ Regional Art Prize returns for its fourth year.
More than an exhibition, Queerthentic is a gathering — a moment in time where stories are shared, identities are honoured, and regional LGBTQIA+ artists are celebrated for the richness they bring to our communities. It is a space where authenticity is not only welcomed, but embraced.
Presented by Macedon Ranges Accessible Arts Inc, Queerthentic shines a light on artists living and creating beyond metropolitan centres — artists whose voices are often underrepresented, yet deeply connected to place, resilience and self-expression.
The 2026 opening will be held on Saturday May 16 at 1pm, coinciding with IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia) on May 17. This alignment offers a powerful reminder of both how far we’ve come, and the importance of continuing to stand together in visibility, pride and solidarity.
Visitors can expect an afternoon that is as welcoming as it is inspiring. Alongside a diverse exhibition of works spanning a range of mediums, the opening celebration will feature live performances from the Rainbow Voices Community Choir and other local performers, filling the space with music and joy. Free nibbles and refreshments will be available, creating a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere for all to enjoy.
Importantly, Queerthentic is a family-friendly event — an invitation for people of all ages, identities and backgrounds to come together, connect and experience the power of art to build understanding and belonging.
The event will also include the announcement of this year’s prize recipients, including an artist who will be awarded a solo exhibition — a meaningful opportunity to further develop and share their practice.
At its heart, Queerthentic is about community. It is about creating space in regional Victoria where LGBTQIA+ people feel seen, celebrated and supported — not just within gallery walls, but across the broader cultural landscape.
Whether you are an art lover, a supporter of local creatives, or simply curious, all are warmly invited to attend this vibrant and uplifting celebration.
