In the letter by Brian Clarke (‘Courage and intelligence’, Opinions, July 24) he bemoans the fact that many people in Castlemaine find discussion of climate change ‘unnerving and disturbing’.
I have always found the exact opposite.
We obviously move in very different circles as most people I meet here are not only keen to enter in to discussion of this issue, but are deeply concerned about it.
It is a pity that Clarke’s ‘wide reading’ on this topic has led him to only recommend the viewpoint of much discredited professor Ian Plimer. This is selective and very narrow reading really. As Michael Ashley’s article in the conservative daily newspaper The Australian wrote as long ago as 2009, ‘there is no science in Plimer’s primer’. The Castlemaine library has a wide range of good reading material on this subject.
