Worst nightmares

Patrick Hockey, Castlemaine

Climate change denial is a complex belief system grounded in a mistrust of authority and a tendency to believe in conspiracy theories, but it is of little importance to this unfolding crisis.
The fact is polling has shown now for more than a decade that the public has accepted the science that the burning of fossil fuels is changing the climate.
Extensive recorded data now buttresses the science and in Paris last year 195 countries signed up for stronger emissions reductions goals.
What is deeply problematic however is that this widespread acceptance of the science has not been followed by strong support for radical action within these countries.
There is now a genuine and well-documented threat of full ecological collapse that in itself will lead to appalling hardship, but by dint of the geopolitical strife it will also bring on, threatens to create the dystopia of our worst nightmares.
We must seek now to own the threat at a personal level and reclaim the right to a safe and prosperous future for all.
