It’s a measure of how far the Kyneton Football Netball Club has travelled that a seven-goal lead against Kangaroo Flat in the final term seemed a bit ho hum.
The crowd wasn’t into it and nor did it seem were the players. Then they exploded! The Tigers rammed home 12 goals in 20 minutes in a stunning finish to the game and won by a staggering 121 points. It was an exciting burst that brought the day alive. It also highlighted how damaging this group can be when it plays its best football. Kyneton has gears and is a dangerous football side because of it. But it’s not yet the complete article as it’s prone to lapses. Playing consistent high-level football remains a constant theme for coach Luke Beattie. Perhaps it’s the last piece of the puzzle. The ultimate test is coming in the next game when the Tigers play Strathfieldsaye on their home deck. They remain the standard bearers of the competition.
Rhys Magin played one of his high-level games where he looked a class above. He booted seven goals, five of them in the final quarter. It was great to see Tom O’Sullivan play such an influential match in his only second game back. He kicked five and was a very lively forward on the day. Ward chimed in with three among a spread of 10 goal kickers. Magin and Harrison Huntley were the two best players on the ground with Tom O’Sullivan not far behind. Josh Govan was again named in the best as was Billy Mahoney while Gareth Bowes is returning to the form that saw him almost win a Michelson Medal. The Tigers protected their third position on the table with this huge win, but it will start to get tougher with the Storm waiting after the bye. The Tigers are travelling well but a tough run into the finals is beckoning.
