Exciting new era for Magpies

Senior and Junior Magpie players enjoyed a hit out together recently.

An exciting new era of football continues for Castlemaine Football Netball Club with the female football program going from strength to strength.

Last week the club held its first joint development session between the junior and open age sections, with a big group of players being put through their paces by senior coach Tiahna Cochrane.

The session was the culmination of the CFNC Junior Summer Series Program, which has seen the young Magpies train monthly over the off-season in an effort to maintain their skills and fitness.

The program has seen a number of new players try footy for the first time as well as welcoming back a number of experienced junior footballers.

CFNC Women’s Football operations manager Georgia Banks said the joint training session was part of a club-wide approach to creating a pathway for young players, which is for the first time an offering the club could make for its female sides.

“We’ve had a number of junior players training with the senior squad over the pre-season,” Ms Banks said.

“It’s a great way to keep developing our young players and will help make a smooth transition for juniors to move into the senior program in the future,” she said.

“The formation of our inaugural senior women’s football team has afforded, for the first time, the opportunity for CFNC to nurture a love of football from Auskick, through juniors, and all the way into senior women’s football. It’s great for our players, our club and our community,” Ms Banks said.

Both football groups now continue their pre-season programs and recruiting is continuing in both open age and junior ranks.

The senior side is training Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6pm until 7.30pm at the Camp Reserve and anyone interested in trying the sport is encouraged to come along and have a kick.

The junior program will commence pre-season training on Wednesday March 2 at 5pm at the Camp Reserve and new players are most welcome, with vacancies in all age groups, Under 18, Under 16, Under 14 and Under 12s.
